Now this might not seem like a big deal, but in the Dollar Tree coupon world it is. Let me explain.
Papers on Sunday usually cost around $3.00, but if you go to the Dollar Tree they are only $1.00. The word has gotten out and all of those people who like to cut coupons line up 15 minutes before the store opens to get their paper. Now I love my wife, so I do this for her so she can get her coupons to cut out. Honestly it saves us quite a bit of money also which is always nice. Now as all places there is always someone who tries to mess it up for everyone, and the Dollar Tree Sunday morning group is no different. I don't know her name, but I refer to her as Buzzkill. Buzzkill has a way of ruining everything for everyone, so allow me to give a couple of examples:

You used to be able to bring back papers and exchange them if they were missing some coupons. Buzzkill would go to her car and each week and like clockwork would complain that her papers had no coupons. Well this happened for 3 months in a row and it became obvious she was going to her car, taking out the coupons, and then coming back and getting new papers for free and getting those coupons. So Dollar Tree instituted a no return policy on papers.

Dollar Tree had a long standing policy of a 3 paper limit, but they for 5 glorious months had a no paper limit. You can only imagine the excitement of people, but once again Buzzkill ruined it for everyone. She would always be the first one in line and and would literally buy between 15-20 papers and everyone else would have to fight over the remaining papers. Things got a little testy during this time and I honestly saw people almost come to blows a few times over a $3 paper. So again Buzzkill ruined this policy.

Lastly it appears she was the one who stole all the papers last week which made her public enemy #1.

That brings us to this morning where I once again noticed police cars outside of Dollar Tree when I got there. Luckily the papers were not stolen, but for some reason Buzzkill was outside of the store arguing with Liberty's finest. It turns out that Buzzkill came back to the store this morning to buy her paper and when she showed up the manager called the police. It appears after her theft of papers, Buzzkill has been trespassed from Dollar Tree. Now the next question becomes who is the next Buzzkill and hopefully it isn't me.

It is called Not Your Grandmother's Attic and he sells a variety of stuff. In the beginning Lance was doing this just as a hobby and a way to pay for trips, but now he has a new goal. Julie wants to remodel the master bathroom next summer, so Lance's goal is to use Ebay and summer school to pay for it and to not have to use our savings. He has started a blog where he shows what he has sold each week and how much he has made. When Lance was talking to the roof guy he asked if we wanted to have our dish put back on the roof. We had been talking for quite some time about getting rid of cable and after we figured this was the perfect time because we didn't want a dish on our roof anymore. The other problem with the dish was that anytime the weather was bad, our signal would go out. We narrowed our choices down to YouTube TV and Hulu. Lance was rooting for YouTube TV because he liked the navigation better, but Julie wanted Hulu because it had A&E which had some of her favorite shows. In the end Hulu won out, but the problem was that Julie enjoys her Hallmark Channel and neither of these services had this. We solved this problem by subscribing to the Hallmark Now app and installing it on the TV's. This basically has every Hallmark movie ever made and is pretty cheap. All in all right now we are loving it and it is saving us quite a bit of money. Just one more step in our house renovation.Lance and Julie Huebnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01832166568653487177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7553047793803043639.post-87148943521736158512019-07-17T17:38:00.003-07:002019-07-17T17:38:41.948-07:00Entry 616: Changes Part 2Since the door has been installed the next thing was to paint the house. The last time the house was painted was 10 years ago by Lance and his dad. They did a great job, but the house was desperately in need of a new paint job. Lance decided that he did not want to take this job on again, ever since the Widow's Peak incident. We have a huge Widow's Peak that Lance could not reach on a ladder, so he actually had to get on top of the roof and lean down to paint it. Lance is terrified of heights and this was not an experience he wanted to do again.

Julie again chose the paint color and trim color. She wanted something that would set the door off and she did a great job. It is amazing to see what a new paint job will do to a house.
Lance is taking the summer off to do some of the repairs himself, but Julie is in charge of all the redecorating. So we are kind of like Chip and Joanne. The first step in the improvements was a new front door. Saying our front door is sad would be a major understatement. Julie ended up choosing a door she loved which she is going to design the whole exterior of the house around. So here it is the door that was chosen!!!
We are lucky enough to live close enough to a bigger city where we can just jump in the car and be at the arena in 15 minutes. Our latest concert was Sam Smith and it was amazing. Sam Smith is a singer from England, for those who didn't know, and he has an amazing voice and range. He is somewhat popular and we were both very excited because we love his voice and songs. It was an extremely intimate concert and what made it great was that before every song he would give the story behind why he wrote the song. As corny as it sounds there were times where we just closed our eyes and just listened to his voice. Our next concert will be Billy Joel.
I remember back all the way to 1993 when I began my career at Howard County R-III Schools in Glasgow, Missouri. I was hired to be a BD teacher for all students in grades K-12. I signed my first contract for a whopping $18,000 and I thought I had struck it rich. I taught there for three years and it was trial by fire (the highlight was a student bringing a knife to school in his boot). After Glasgow, my next stop was Kirksville, Missouri where I was a grades 6-8 special services teacher. There was a little controversy there because I was originally hired to be a K-5 special services teacher, but two days before school started up I was reassigned to the 6-8 building. I remember the elementary school was not very happy about that. I was in Kirksville for four years and that brought me to my last spot; Liberty, Missouri. Throughout my teaching career I have had many highs and lows:

I have been recognized numerous times for things that I have accomplished in my career. I was one of the Northland Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Teaching award winners, a finalist for the Time Warner Cable Crystal Apple award, been written up in many articles for the work I have done, run the best middle school broadcasting department in the state of Missouri, and have been lucky enough to receive grants to further the things I could do with students.

I have met many great people and unfortunately lost many great people at the same time. I have been lucky enough to meet and marry my best friend, Julie, during this time. She is by far the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I also lost one of the most important people in my life during that time: my mom. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her, but I also remember how my DMS teaching family rallied around me and made me feel so loved.

I have been reminded that teaching is just a job and that I also need to take time for me. 2003 was a difficult year for me because I had a pretty big medical problem. The summer of 2002 I was diagnosed with a heart issue and was scheduled to have open heart surgery to fix it. I am going to make a long story short and say that in the end I was told that I was going to die if I had the operation, but at the same time if I didn't have the operation I would die. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota saved my life and made me a much humbler person. Whenever I think I have something bad I will always remember seeing the little girl in the elevator going through cancer treatments. I would see her quite frequently and she would always have a smile on her face.

I know this is a longer post, but there are a few people that I would like to blog about that made a big difference in my career:

My mom. She was the reason that I got into teaching. She was a teacher for over 30 years and she absolutely loved her job. She was respected and loved by her students and fellow teachers and I remember wanting to be just like her. I remember telling her all the things I was doing and how proud she was, but she always reminded me to keep pushing myself to become better and never settle.

Sallee McAnelly: she was my mentor for my first two years of teaching and she was so patient with me. Not many people would have been as patient as she was with a 22 year old kid who thought they knew everything.

Greg Langston: he was my sounding board when I was in Kirksville. He was the high school BD teacher and we would frequently sit down and bounce ideas off of each other. Plus I think we kept each other sane.

Scott Carr: he gave me the chance to start my career in Liberty. He and I still laugh about my interview because as he was walking me through the school I had to actually step out and take a call from my school because they had a student out of control and they had no idea how to calm him down. I am told that is one of the big reasons I was hired.

Dee Wynne: she taught me humility. When I came to Liberty I was a very arrogant person and Dee in her patient way taught me that I needed to be a part of a team in order to make an even bigger difference.

Brad Armstrong: this was the first person that entrusted me to be a department chair of a special services department. I didn't think that I was ready, but he encouraged me and for that I am truly grateful because he caused me to get out of my comfort zone.

My wife: she is an extremely patient person that allows me to spend the time needed to make all of my crazy ideas come true. She truly is my soulmate and best friend.

Eric Langhorst: I refer to this man as my Yoda. He caused me to rethink everything I thought I knew about education. He showed me how technology could be used in the classroom to make learning more meaningful. This man took me along on his crazy ideas and without his innovative ways I wouldn't be where I'm at today. Thankfully I never joined him on his buffalo chips idea though.

I know I have forgotten quite a few people that I have met along the way, but I could be writing this entry forever. Tomorrow is the start of year 25 and hopefully it will be as meaningful as the past 24 years.

They fly in exotic butterflies from all over the world and you get a chance to walk through and have the butterflies fly all around you. It is a great event that everyone should go see.

Julie's dad, Kent, was a very special and important person in the lives of many people. Unfortunately he passed away in 2013 and Julie has been thinking about getting a tattoo to remember him for quite some time. She finally settled on a design and found an artist that she truly liked. After sitting in the chair for about 3 hours, here is what it came out looking like. It is truly beautiful and a great way to remember Kent.

Shania doesn't tour very much anymore, but when we noticed she was coming to Kansas City for a concert we knew that we had to get tickets. Lance loves a good country concert because it allows him to dig out his country clothes (he loves his Merschman Seeds hat), but he was a little apprehensive because Shania is getting a little bit up there in age and hasn't really had a hit in awhile. She ended putting on an excellent show where she played all of her hits and was quite entertaining with all of the different things she had going on. We would have to rate this in our top 5 concerts that we have ever been too. Right now we are getting into the thick of our concerts and we still have tickets to go see Sam Smith, Maroon 5, Ed Sheeran, Billy Joel, Mercy Me, and Elton John. If Lance can remember, we will post updates from each of these great concerts.

It is almost an obsession with her to try to get the squeaker out of the ball and she will do it for hours upon hours. The only thing she enjoys more than trying to get the squeaker out of a ball is doing it on our bed. Julie dislikes when she does this, but since Lance is on summer break she gets to do it quite often.
Lance has had a lot of snow days in his teaching career, but up until now Julie has never had the joy of one. That all changed a few Mondays ago when she experienced her first one. She even had the joy of knowing that it had been cancelled before even going to bed which was exceptionally nice. Needless to say she sat around and watched Hallmark Christmas movies all day to celebrate this.Lance and Julie Huebnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01832166568653487177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7553047793803043639.post-44682690518223564212016-12-29T04:19:00.000-08:002016-12-29T04:19:24.101-08:00Entry 602: Christmas CardThis year we decided instead of mailing Christmas cards we would just do a digital Christmas card. It is our way of trying to be more environmentally conscious. Julie chose the picture which is from our favorite part of our summer Ireland trip, a little house on the Aran Islands.
Our goal is to make $100 a week and we were just short on that this week. We ended up selling only 6 items and unfortunately most of them were lower priced items. Some of the interesting things we sold this week were a 1999 Creed concert shirt that we sold for $22.50 and a Harley Davidson leather hat that we sold for $25.

Some of the interesting things we found this week were a pair of Adidas baseball cleats that had never been worn. They were a great find at $9.99. I also found a Chicago Bulls hat that says Best Record Ever from their 1996-1997 season. It was a really interesting hat that we bought for $1 at a yard sale. Last, but certainly not least, we found a 1950's liquor bottle with cork stopper all in great condition. We ended up buying it for only $1.
Trust us when we say it hasn't been because we've been lazy, but we have been extremely busy. We hereby give you the Huebner promise that this won't happen again and let us fill you in on a few things that have been happening since our last post in March.

We have had a wedding in the family. Julie's mom, Nancy, tied the knot with a very nice man that she met named Fred. It was an amazing wedding and we are happy to have Fred be a part of the family.

Last August Julie became a college student again. Julie has had a hankering for awhile to get back into the classroom and Missouri State gave her a chance to get her degree in working with students who have visual impairments. The best part is that the classes were all online and free through a state grant. That's right Julie is getting her teaching degree for free!!! The classes haven't been that bad, but the Braille writing and reading were a little difficult. You are about to notice that a few things begin to happen because of Julie taking college classes.

Lance started a store on Ebay. Since Julie was going to have to student teach in August of 2017 she was going to have to quit her job and we would be a one income family. Lance took it upon himself to make some extra money on Ebay to make it a smooth transition into a one income family. Lance had been doing Ebay for awhile, but he hadn't put a lot of effort into it. Now, however, it is like a second job to him but it is something that he actually really enjoys. He makes a pretty good second income off of this every month and he plans on using this blog every Sunday to post what he has sold and also some interesting things that he has found recently. Those that are interested in that keep checking back on Sunday, but if it is not your cup of tea just scroll past it every week.

We took a 10 day trip to Ireland. We had been planning this for sometime and it did not disappoint us at all. We could tell you all about it here, but it would be easier for you just to check out our Ireland blog. Click here for the Ireland blog.

Julie got a new job. Julie is now working for the North Kansas City School District as a teacher of the visually impaired. Julie had always said that there were two school districts that she wanted to work for and one of them was NKC. They had an opening in June and Julie went ahead an applied and literally less than 10 hours before we got on a plane to fly to Ireland she got a phone call offering her the job. Now it was difficult doing all of the paperwork while in Ireland, but she got it done and started her new teacher training on Friday. We like to joke that she was only unemployed for less than a week.

We have had other things going on, but these are just some of the highlights.

Now the plan right now is to do most of our blog updating on Sunday's, so that is by far the best day to check back in and see what we have been up to for the week. If you are one of those impatient people though keep checking back in all week because maybe we had some free time and will do some posting.

Dear Kansas City Royals,
This is tough for me to write because I am usually the one reading this letter and not the one writing it. Normally this is the time where the person says it's not you, it's me; but lets be real because we both know it's you.
Our love affair began back in 2010 when for Christmas we decided to purchase a 10 game package. Even though the team was terrible back then, we loved every minute of it. Throughout the years we have had a half season package, a full season package, traveled to Minnesota and Pittsburgh to see you play, and have been to Surprise, Arizona to spend an entire week at spring training. You reciprocated this love by allowing us to meet all the players that we have ever wanted (Hosmer, Cain, Perez, Moustakus, etc...), giving us free tickets to games, putting us on the big screen far more times than I can remember, letting Lance win a free cell phone during a game once, seeing not only an All Star Game but also all the activities that go with it, and allowing Julie to meet Danny Duffey to start a friendship with him.
Everything was great until 2014 when you started changing. The previous two years we bought the buy 2 tickets, get 2 tickets free plan with some friends. We would split the tickets with them and see nearly every game, but for some reason you did away with this and then lied to us by saying that you had informed us of this ahead of time when you hadn't. We forgave you for this, but then we began to notice other changes. The free tickets for being loyal season ticket holders disappeared, the ticket prices became higher, food prices were raised, opening day tickets had to be purchased separately because they were no longer a part of the 21 game package, and a lot of the perks season ticket holders received were taken away.
The final straw was when we were told that with our 21 game package that we no longer would get post season ticket priority and would still have to buy Opening Night tickets because our ticket package wasn't high enough. We discussed this and finally decided that we had enough and were going to discontinue our season tickets. We had seen the Royals play in playoff games and go from a lousy team to winning the World Series, all along the way making some great friends.
Now we know you have been calling us begging for us to take you back. We have heard your pleas, but I am going to be the bad guy here and say it just isn't going to happen. Will we still see you? Probably, but not nearly as much. Just know that we will always treasure the memories, but we have to go our separate ways. Thanks for everything.
Extreme Couponing, for those who have never seen it, is a show where people cut coupons and save ridiculous amounts of money at the store (we're talking usually well over a hundred dollars). Lance was not on board with Julie's idea at first, but he decided to go along with it to see if we could save any money doing this.

Let me explain how this works, Huebner style. Every Sunday Lance gets up at 8:45 and goes to Dollar Tree to pick up two-three Sunday papers. Why Dollar Tree, you ask. Good question, Lance goes to Dollar Tree because each Sunday paper is only a dollar while everywhere else it is $2.25 (see already we're saving money). Once home, Julie goes through the paper and takes out all the ads and coupons she wants to look at. Then the process of cutting the coupons out and throwing away the expired coupons begins. This is only the beginning because Lance has companies emailing him coupons all the time, so we then have to go through the emails and see what kind of deals they have for us. The last step is to go through all of the ads and find where the good deals are and if we have any coupons for them. This whole process takes between 2-3 hours each Sunday.

Afterwards we do our grocery shopping for the week and usually we save between $30-$40, but this weekend it seemed like everything we were looking for was on sale and we ended up saving close to $100. This all sounds like a great deal, but there are some downfalls to it. The biggest problem we ran in to was having so many things that we didn't have enough space for it all. We ended up having to clean out the towel closet so we could use it to store all of the items. Let's just say that we have enough toothpaste, deodorant, and dog treats for a couple of years.

This is a lot of work, but in the end with the money we save it is worth it.

This is by far one of our favorite Grandma Dorothy stories.

Lance's uncle, John, was a huge Yankees fan back in the day. Lance's grandfather decided to take them to see a Yankees series (you'll have to forgive Lance because he doesn't remember where the series was at, but it was an away series) and somehow or another they were able to get a room on the same floor that the Yankees were staying. This was great for Uncle John because he was able to collect almost all of their autographs on a ball, but the one he was missing was Yogi Berra. Apparently Yogi stayed in his room most of the trip and when he did come out it was late at night, so getting his autograph was difficult.

One day they got lucky though because Lance's grandmother and uncle saw Yogi getting onto the elevator, so they rushed real quick and got onto the elevator with him. Lance's uncle went up to Yogi and asked him for an autograph and he said no which devastated him. What Yogi did next is what caused Lance's grandmother to lose it and start yelling at Yogi: he turned to a couple of good looking women in the elevator and flirt with them and signing autographs on whatever they gave him. Lance's grandma didn't react real well to this and proceeded to start yelling at Yogi and telling him what a bad role model he was and how he should be ashamed of himself (now remember this is what Lance's grandma told him, so the words may have been a little stronger).

When the elevator finally got to the bottom floor, Yogi stepped out and looked at Lance's grandmother and told her to give him the damn ball to sign. They gave him the ball and afterwards he looked at Lance's grandmother and asked her if there was anything else she wanted him to sign so she would shut up. My grandmother told him no, thanked him, and walked away. This is by far one of our favorite grandma stories.

Now this story has never been verified by anybody, but Lance's grandmother is quite spunky so it wouldn't be surprising if it was true.Lance and Julie Huebnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01832166568653487177noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7553047793803043639.post-6633925930097176162015-09-21T18:29:00.002-07:002015-09-21T18:29:54.044-07:00Entry 595: Now We're SmokingLance loves to grill and has been wanting to buy a smoker for quite some time. Lance had been doing some research and decided that he wanted a charcoal/wood smoker because it had a better flavor. Granted an electric smoker would be easier, but the taste just isn't the same. Saturday as we were walking through Lowe's, there it was a smoker that met all of Lance's criteria and was on sale. Julie allowed Lance to pull the trigger and thus we are now the proud owners of a smoker.

Naturally we had to give the smoker a trial run, so on Sunday we prepped a pork butt and proceeded to smoke it. Three and a half hours later we were able to eat the fruits of Lance's labor and it was great.
